François Papineau-Couture. Instrument builder, flutist, b Montreal 1 Apr 1953; BA teaching (Montreal) 1972, B MUS (Montreal) 1977. After studying the flute, he undertook a one-year stay in London studying the building of plucked keyboard instruments with John Rawson. On a grant for the Canada Council, he visited in 1983 the principal museums and early instrument collections of northern Europe. From 1979 to 1987, he devoted himself to building spinets and harpsichords based on the Italian, English, and French schools of the 17th and 18th centuries. With a grant from the MACQ in 1988, he spent one year working at the Musée instrumental du Conservatoire de Paris. In addition to his career as an instrument builder, he has been a researcher for various CBC programs. He married the contralto Madeleine Jalbert who participated in the recording of the CD Musique en Nouvelle-France with the Ensemble Haydn-Héritage (1989, REM 311110-XCD); with the pianist Suzanne Goyette and the flutist Lise Daoust, she also recorded Jean Papineau-Couture's Mort and Églogues (RCI 647).
