Manley, Gordon
Gordon (John) Manley. Pianist, b Vancouver 1 Aug 1915, d New York 1 Jan 1968. His early training in Vancouver was followed by study in New York with Sigismund Stojowski, at the Mannes School, and with Egon Petri. In 1944, after the first of three Town Hall appearances, he started a two-year tour of the USA as a soloist and as accompanist for Marjorie Lawrence. From 1943 to 1949 he performed frequently in Toronto and Montreal, in public concert and on the CBC. He was often a guest on Milton Cross' 'Piano Playhouse' on CBS radio and between 1949 and 1951 made two European concert tours and gave two recitals at Carnegie Hall, all to critical acclaim. He abandoned his concert career in the mid-1950s and managed the Fargo Travel Agency in New York City until his death. His scrapbooks are deposited at the National Library of Canada.
