Papineau-Couture, Isabelle

Isabelle Papineau-Couture (b Baudoin). Freelancer, author, b Montreal 6 Jul 1918, d there 22 Oct 1987; BA (Montreal) 1938. She married Jean Papineau-Couture in 1944. From 1953 to 1968 she was responsible for managing sales and fund raisings at the Société de musique canadienne. During the 1970s she worked on the classification and the compiling of MSO archives. She was the author of several unpublished poems, including Nuit polaire set to music by her husband in 1986. She contributed to EMC. Her personal documents have been deposited at the BN du Q.

Her uncle Charles Baudoin, composer (b Farnham, Que, Nov 1877, d Montreal Feb 1961), studied with Arthur Letondal. In Paris, where he remained for 25 years, he was the pupil of André Gédalge and of Vincent d'Indy. In addition to some piano pieces, he composed melodies with texts by Canadian (Albert Lozeau, Émile Nelligan) and French poets, five of which were published by Hérelle in Paris, and four recorded by the soprano Liette Turner and the baritone Erik Oland with Réjean Coallier at the piano (1989, SNE 557-CD). These were also sung by Rodolphe Plamondon, Joseph Saucier, Renée Maheu, and others.
