The Centennial Concert Hall is a performing arts centre located on Main Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It opened in in 1968 and is owned by the province and operated by the Manitoba Centennial Centre Corporation.
History and Architecture
The Centennial Concert Hall was created as part of the Manitoba Centennial Centre, a project to mark Canada’s centenary. (See also Canada’s Centennial Celebrations, 1967.) The Centennial Concert Hall was designed by the architectural firms Green Blankstein Russell Associates, Moody Moore and Partners, and Smith Carter Searle Associates and the acoustics firm Bolt, Beranek & Newman Inc. The hall opened in March 1968.
The Centennial Concert Hall has a proscenium stage 24 m wide and 12 m deep, an orchestra pit and a seating capacity of 2,305. The hall is acclaimed for its excellent acoustics and state-of-the-art equipment.
Performances
The Centennial Concert Hall is the home of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Manitoba Opera Association. It also hosts entertainments ranging from amateur groups to internationally acclaimed artists, including country, rock, jazz, and Broadway musicals. Some Canadian artists that have performed at the Centennial Concert Hall include Stompin’ Tom Connors, Sarah McLachlan, Tegan and Sara, The Tragically Hip and Drake.
