MIAC/ACIM

MIAC/ACIM (Music Industries Association of Canada/Association canadienne de l'industrie de la musique). National trade association of Canadian manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributors of musical instruments and accessories, published music, and sound reinforcement products, incorporated in 1972, with a secretariat in Toronto. Established after an initiative taken by George Bishop and Bill Hough in 1971, MIAC's 13-member board and 5 committees oversee a variety of special trade interests and act as a lobby group for the industry. One of the committees is responsible for administering an annual trade show, MUSICANADA, which began in 1972. In addition to the members' exhibits and the meetings, this three-day event, normally held in Toronto, includes special seminars, one of which focuses on music education and its relationship to the industry. The periodical Canadian Music Trade includes regular reports of MIAC news and activities. In 1990, 87 Canadian companies were active members of MIAC, and the executive secretary and secretariat manager was Al Kowalenko, who had assumed the post in 1979.
