Hélène Paul. Musicologist, teacher, b Montreal 9 Feb 1943; B MUS (Montreal) 1965, M MUS (Montreal) 1967, M MUS musicology (Sorbonne) 1970, diplôme d'études approfondies history of music and musicology (Sorbonne) 1988. Following studies at the University of Montreal, she worked at the Sorbonne with Jacques Chailley and at the École César-Franck with Olivier Alain. Her main field of research has been musical life in Canada, a subject on which she has lectured and published articles, some of them in Les Cahiers de l'ARMuQ. She has taught at the Montreal Catholic Schoolboard (1967-8, 1971-3), the Marguerite-Bourgeoys College (1971-6), and the UQAM (from 1976). On behalf of the Quebec Dept of Education (1975-6, 1979-81, 1982-3) she sat on the consultative committee on arts teaching in high schools, and she was a consultant for the approval of pedagogical materials. She was the author of most chapters of the work Initiation à la littérature musicale (Quebec City 1987), a collaborative project also involving Louise Bail Milot and Louise Hirbour. In 1991, she was preparing a doctorate in musicology at the Sorbonne on musical life in Montreal from 1917 to 1930 based on local press coverage of that time. She has contributed to EMC.
