Henry Borden
Henry Borden, businessman, public servant (b at Halifax 25 Sept 1901; d at Toronto 5 May 1989). Educated at McGill, Dalhousie and Oxford, Borden became one of Toronto's most prominent corporate lawyers. At the outbreak of WWII he was appointed to the War Supply Board in Ottawa and in 1942 was made chairman of the War Time Industries Control Board. Borden and C.D. HOWE, the minister of munitions and supply, worked well together and became friends.
In 1943 Borden returned to his law practice and became chief fund raiser for the Conservative Party. From 1946 until 1963 he was president of Brazilian Traction, Light and Power Co (Brascan), and vice-chairman (1947-64) and chairman (1964-68) of the board of governors of University of Toronto. Borden coauthored Handbook of Canadian Company Law (1931) and edited 2 books originally drafted by his uncle: Sir Robert BORDEN'sMemoirs (1938) and Letters to Limbo (1971).
