The northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), the only mockingbird in Canada, is a rare, permanent resident across Canada and is slowly extending its range northward. Northern mockingbirds inhabit dense thickets and woodland edges, maintaining territories year round, defending food sources in winter.
Grey above, greyish white below, its white wing patches and white outer tail feathers are conspicuous in flight. Its loud, musical, repetitive song is often given at night and includes mimicked vocalizations of other birds.
