Robert Rumilly, nationalist historian (b in Martinique 1897; d at Montréal 8 Mar 1983). In an amazing series of 42 volumes, Rumilly set forth the history of Québec from 1867 to the present.

Robert Silverman, pianist, teacher (b at Montréal, Qué 25 May 1938). Silverman came to a full life of music late, by his own account, having first concentrated on engineering, though he made his debut with the MONTREAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA when he was 14.

Robert Verebes, violist, teacher (born 15 November 1934 in Budapest, Hungary; died 12 April 2016 in Montréal, QC). Robert Verebes’s performances exhibited sophisticated musicianship and impassioned playing. After earning his artist diploma at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, Verebes came to Canada and became a prominent member of the Montréal Symphony Orchestra for 40 years. He was also an acclaimed soloist and a founding member of the New Chamber Music Ensemble of Ottawa, the Musica Camerata Montréal and the Classical Quartet of Montréal. He taught chamber music at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal for 23 years and premiered several works commissioned for him, including Jean Coulthard’s Symphonic Ode and Lothar Klein’s Concerto Sacro.

Robertson William Davies, CC, OOnt, writer, journalist, professor (born 28 August 1913 in Thamesville, ON 28 Aug 1913; died 2 December 1995 in Orangeville, ON).

All mortals are replaceable, runs the modern mantra, betraying the ethic of programmed obsolescence that has come to dominate our culture. But there are exceptions, and one of them - Robertson Davies - died last week, leaving a gap in the Canadian conscience that can never be filled.

Roderick Andrew Francis MacKenzie, priest, scholar (b at Liverpool, Eng 15 Nov 1911; d at Pickering, Ont 30 Apr 1994). He came to Peterborough, Ont, with his family in 1924, then entered the Society of Jesus at Guelph, Ont, in 1928.

Sharman, Rodney. Composer, teacher, b Biggar, Sask, 24 May 1958; B MUS (Victoria) 1980, Reifediplom (Freiburg) 1983; PH D (SUNY at Buffalo) 1990. His teachers have included Murray Adaskin, Rudolf Komorous, Brian Ferneyhough and Morton Feldman.
